December 2010 on this beautiful island saw the inaugural event of the Boracay Island Shuffleboard World Cup at Calypso Lounge.
Practice and tactical discussions had been in progress for weeks as the 8 countries prepared themselves in the hope of lifting the World Cup trophy. The Philippines were the favourites and put forward 9 players to the qualifying rounds. Switzerland were also strong with 6 players. The other countries included Austria, Germany, England, the surprise entry from Wales, and the combined ROTW team of Holland-Italy.
Jens Hammer, Master of Shuffleboard, directed and umpired the tournament. In the qualifying rounds country play-offs took place with singles games to 15 points to identify the top two or four players for country team 1 and team 2.
By the third evening we were playing the doubles games to 21 points for the quarter and semi finals. Both Philippines teams came through the quarter finals knocking out Austria 1 and Switzerland, England won out over Austria 2, and Germany went through over ROTW.
In the semi finals England met their nemesis Germany in a spirited game, with Germany coming out on top. The two Philippines teams then went head-to-head in a truly thrilling semi final. The girls of Philippines 2 steamed ahead with 20-9 only for the boys of Philippines 1 to catch up 20-17 in one swoop, followed up by 20-20 in the next end. It went right down to the last stone with Rhoda snatching victory for the ladies!
The final Philippines versus Germany was somewhat less close, with Philippines ending it quickly with a score of 21-0. They were certainly the favorites and the Philippines didn’t disappoint! Mae and Rhoda triumphantly lifted the Shuffleboard World Cup for their country in 2010.
The prize draw topped off the evening, with sponsorship from Asia Divers, Sundown Restaurant, Mares, Calypso Lounge and Calypso Diving. Maureen was exstatic to win a Cressi mask and snorkel set since she’s just embarked on her diving lessons!
Thanks to everyone for taking part, being such good sports and making the first Shuffleboard World Cup of Boracay so much fun. See you for more next year!
